The United States Senate Youth Program has begun its statewide selection process. In March, two Alaska students will join 104 other delegates for Washington Week – an intensive educational program about the workings of the Senate and the federal government overall. State delegates will have outstanding leadership qualities and a strong commitment to public service. They generally rank in the 1 percent of their states academically. Each delegate receives a $10,000 undergraduate scholarship and an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. Alaska’s eligible students must be high school juniors or seniors, an elected student officer for the entire 2016-2017 academic year, and state residents. Students should submit their application to their school principal or myself by Monday, October 24th. Each school can nominate one student. Due October 24th! ![]()
The mission of the program is to recognize and honor outstanding high school seniors, and thereby encourage high attainment among all students. Students are selected on the basis of outstanding scholarship. For most of the program’s existence, nominees have been invited to apply for recognition based upon SAT or ACT scores. As the program has grown, candidates have been invited to apply for demonstrating academic excellence in other ways to include visual and performing arts, creative writing, leadership school community involvement/service and extraordinary achievement. This is not a scholarship program. It is a national recognition program; however, Scholars will receive the Presidential Scholars Medallion at an expenses paid ceremony in their honor in Washington, DC June, 2017. To learn more about the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program and the Commission on Presidential Scholars, please visit the Web site at: www.ed.gov/psp. Submit your application to your school principal by Monday, October 24th. Each school can nominate up to two students. Due October 24th! ![]()
